About Ankarana Special Reserve

Ankarana Special Reserve spans over 18,000 hectares in the northern part of Madagascar and is famous for its striking karst limestone landscape characterized by jagged pinnacles, deep canyons, and numerous caves. The area’s geology includes extensive caves and underground rivers, forming one of the most significant karst regions on the island. A moist tropical climate supports dense dry deciduous forests, spiny forests, and mangroves along the reserve's coastal edges. The reserve harbors a diversity of endemic species such as crowned lemurs, Sanford’s brown lemurs, fossa, and rare reptiles. Birdwatchers can spot Madagascar fish eagles and other unique avian fauna. The cultural heritage of nearby communities adds to the site’s significance. Visitors are attracted to Ankarana for trekking on trails that traverse the pinnacles, exploring caves including the famous Bat Cave and Andrafiabe Cave, and observing wildlife in its relatively intact habitat. The reserve campgrounds and local guides provide access to sensitive areas. Its karst landscapes offer dramatic scenery and geological interest, complemented by the chance to experience Malagasy biodiversity firsthand.
